What are DIRECTV Genre Packs?
Genre Packs are DIRECTV’s cheaper way to stream live TV. Instead of one big package with 90 to 185 channels, you pick a pack built around one interest: sports, news, kids, entertainment or Spanish-language TV. There is no annual contract, and you can cancel any month.
Every pack comes with the DIRECTV app at no extra cost and unlimited cloud DVR hours, according to DIRECTV’s pack pages. DIRECTV’s own comparison chart also says each pack allows unlimited streams in the home.

A few things stand out. MyEntertainment includes cable news (CNN, FOX News Channel and MS NOW), but DIRECTV’s chart says it has no ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC. MyNews only lists FOX and NBC as local stations. MySports is the only pack that lists all four big local networks, along with ESPN, TNT, TBS and NFL Network. What do the mini packs add?
Mini packs are small add-ons. You can only buy one if you already have a base pack it works with.

The Duos are the real bargain if you want two packs. MyEntertainment and MyNews bought separately cost $87.98 a month, so the Duo saves $12.99. MySports and MyNews separately cost $109.98, so that Duo saves $29.99 a month.
The full sports setup is where the price climbs. MySports with both sports mini packs comes to $98.97 a month after the first month. That is more than YouTube TV’s $82.99 base plan, which DIRECTV’s own chart lists, so a sports fan should compare both before signing up.
Which Genre Pack should you pick?
“Best” here means the lowest monthly cost that still covers the channels you watch most. Start from the one thing you cannot give up.

What Genre Packs leave out
The smaller price comes with gaps. Check these before you switch.
- Local channels are patchy. MyEntertainment has none of the four big networks. MyNews lists only FOX and NBC. If you live near the stations, an antenna can fill the gap for free. Our guide to watching TV for free covers how.
- No satellite. DIRECTV says Genre Packs only work over broadband internet. Satellite customers who switch end their satellite service and may need to return their receivers to avoid a non-return fee.
- You lose some extras when switching. DIRECTV’s support article says switching to a Genre Pack removes purchased items, settings and add-ons from your old plan. It suggests linking Movies Anywhere first to keep movie purchases.

How to add, switch or cancel a Genre Pack
These steps come from DIRECTV’s support article. You need at least one base pack to keep service.
- Sign in to your account at directv.com.
- Go to My TV Package.
- Add or remove packs, then select Submit. DIRECTV says the charge may be prorated, which means you pay only for the part of the month you use.
- Satellite customers who want to switch to Genre Packs must call DIRECTV at 888-365-2479.
- Streaming customers can chat with an agent or call 844-539-1888.
If you remove a base pack, DIRECTV says you can keep watching until the end of that billing cycle. Packs renew each month at the price in effect then, so set a phone reminder a few days before any offer ends. That one step is often the difference between a $49.99 bill and a $64.99 one.
